For first-time buyers, solar panels can feel like a daunting investment. The number one question you’re probably asking is, how much do solar panels cost?
The size of your house, the number of panels you install, the type of panels you use and the amount of energy you consume will all impact the cost of installing solar panels.
In this blog, we take you through the factors that will impact the cost of your solar power system.
House size
The number of people in your household and the size of the building will play a part in how much you pay for solar panels. The Independent recently found that a solar power system for the average three-bedroom house in the UK costs around £6,800.

The type of property you live in will also affect the cost. A small, terraced house will cost less for a system than a large, detached property.
Similarly, the size of your roof and how many panels you can fit on it can dictate the number of solar panels you install. A three-bedroom house will require about 10 panels, whereas a one-bedroom house requires only three.
Energy consumption
The amount of energy your household uses will influence the number of panels you need to install and the type of panels you opt for. Ofgem found that a typical three-bedroom house will use 2,700kWh of energy per year – but this is just an average figure.
For example, if you have an EV charging point or a heat pump, your electricity consumption will be higher than average, and you may want to generate more solar power to offset this increased usage.

Type of panels

Different kinds of solar panels have different prices. Monocrystalline panels – our top recommendation – have a higher upfront cost but are more space and energy-efficient than polycrystalline solar panels, which are lower in price.
On average, monocrystalline panels cost 20% more than their polycrystalline counterparts.
Funding and loans
Many people are put off by the upfront cost of solar panels. Luckily, there are ways to bring the cost down.
Home Energy Scotland, a service funded by the Scottish government, provides grants and loans to help homeowners install solar panel systems. For PV systems, you may be able to access up to £6,000 in grants and loans.
The amount of funding you can access depends on your location, the energy efficiency improvements you already have made in your home, and the further enhancements you would like to make.

Many factors will affect the price of installing solar panels in your home, and we hope that this blog has given you a better idea of what to expect.

The cost of installation depends on the size and capacity of the solar panel system you wish to install, alongside the accessibility and material of the roof and the complexity of the installation process. It’s also important to remember that once you’ve paid the upfront cost, solar panel systems require very little maintenance and can help significantly reduce your energy bills.
